Southern Cameroons Asylee Dr. Sako Laments Biden Political Targeting of DiasporaBy L Todd WoodJuly 19, 2025

The Biden administration was well known for political persecution of its enemies.

These enemies were not just domestic. Overseas political entities were also targeted, says Dr. Samuel Sako, President of the Government of Southern Cameroons in exile.

Sako is focused on bringing attention to a Biden DOJ prosecution against the 'Kansas City 3', three members of the diaspora of Southern Cameroons, who have been held without trial for years in America, a favorite tactic of totalitarians worldwide.

Claude Chi, of the Kansas City suburb Lee’s Summit; Frank Chenyi of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Lah Nestor Langmi, of Buffalo, New York have been in jail at the federal prison in Leavenworth since November 2022. The three African Americans have been jailed on charges of material support of terrorism for the simple reason that they raised money in the U.S. to provide support for civilians in the Southern Cameroons, for their self-defense, against Cameroon’s military forces that attacked them, reported The Kansas City Star.

I spoke with Dr. Sako recently on the situation.

"We have been in the dark as well," Sako mentioned when I asked where the case stands for the Kansas City 3. "We've had multiple hearing dates since November of 2022; the dates are established, then they are postponed, again and again. Currently, the hearing has been delayed from February of this year to now December. These seem to be punitive adjournments. Public defenders are putting pressure on the defendants to accept a plea bargain. But, the defendants are pushing for a trial. Two public attorneys have quit the case. The defendants cannot get bail.

"We were told by an attorney these decisions are coming from Washington; the entire case is political.

"President Trump was firm with President Biya in his first term. He sanctioned the regime, cut off military aid, and forced Biya to restore the internet.

"Then, under Biden, the administration cut off contact with the [Southern Cameroons] diaspora. A political decision was made to go against the rebels.

"There is no evidence for this prosecution. We have written to the DOJ official in charge of the case now under Trump."

We were shown a letter to DOJ regarding Sako's position on the Kansas City 3, recounting the facts of the case. Sako asked for a fresh look at the prosecution of the Kansas City 3 by the Trump DOJ.

It is critical to point out that Americans raising money, supporting and even volunteering to

fight for similar causes in Ukraine and Israel has been allowed to do so in the name of self-defense and protection of their families and communities in those countries after being attacked, without fear of prosecution in the United States, Sako wrote.

Ambassador Tibor Nagy served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 2018-2021 and has been vocal on this subject as well. Amb. Nagy began performing the duties of the Under Secretary for Management of State on Jan 20, with President Trump’s inauguration, until April 4.

The case of the Kansas City 3 is in the U.S. Attorney’s Office Western District of Missouri. The case was driven against the 3 African Americans by the Biden DOJ National Security Division in Washington, DC.
